TIMBERS TIME

-Last Tuesday in Houston, the Timbers battled to a 0-0 draw and Perkins put on a great show keeping the sheet clean along with the rest of the team. BUT I am getting very weary of Boyd up front. His lack of speed and tendency to wait for the game to come to him is not working with those around him. I really hope Kalif come back soon! His speed with the ball will force defenders to leave Nagbe and Boyd with some space.

-The Lamar Hunt Open Cup Schedule has been Posted and The Timbers will enter the cup in the third round on May 29 either the Wilmington Hammerheads in South Carolina, or Cal FC here at Home! It will be good to see if the boys can really tear apart a less than top tier  team, and hopefully give Joeys chain saw a chance to slice up some wood…I think I would like for him to have to add fuel midway through the second half!

-The Timbers will be playing the Chicago Fire at the time of this podcast, an international friendly against Valencia on Wednesday, and Vancouver Next Saturday, so I will let you all know about all these matches NEXT WEEK! Go Timbers!

TECH TIME WITH MARSHALL

Each week I check in with Marshall Kirkpatrick for the latest in Tech news and tweets. Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.

-This past week Marshall tweeted about the new Google Plus App. for iPhone saying “got more than 140 chars to post? i just post a link to a google+ thread” That got me curious about this Google+  app. Then I had ANOTHER friend post on facebook saying “Wow google + on i phone makes Facebook look like a box of flash cards”. SO I did it and set up a google plus account on my iPhone, the app really is nice. If and when the world does tire of Facebook, maybe I will already be ready!

-In chorus with what I said last week about SIRI changing the way search engines work, this last week Google announced it is changing its search parameters also to become more HUMAN like. Check out this CNN Link!  It is called Knowledge Graph and here is a link to the official Google Blog site describing it. At its core is the linking of multiple word searches into single ideas!

-AND in science news, AAnnular Eclipse going on as this show is being published at about 6:30 Pacific Time! Up to 94 % of the sun will be covered by the moon. There are some great links on the website showing WHERE it will be most EPIC and all the safety suggestions about staring at the sun. http://shadowandsubstance.com/201205/Oregon.swf

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

-Last week we talked about a few of Portland’ outstanding parks.  This week, in the same vein of not having to spend money to enjoy our amazing city, I am going to tell you about the Springwater Corridor and the 40 Mile loop. There are two excellent Links on the website that tell you just about everything you need to know, but let me get you wanting to hop on your bike right now! The Springwater corridor essentially starts at Omsi in lower SE Portland and takes you to BORING OREGON!!! That’s about 21 miles. It is part of a much larger 40 mile loop around all of Portland, but that loop involves lots of roads, and there are a few areas in the Sellwood area where you have to travel on some surface streets, but once you hit about 19th and Umatilla its all go! Fast or Slow! It is an amazing way to peddle your way through Portland. You will follow a paved trail that was once a railroad line that went all the way to the Eagle Creek/Estacada. In 1990, the city bought it and began the conversion! You will go along the wetlands of Johnson Creek and be in the Shadow of Powell Butte. It is amazing how you will see so many major roads from a completely different perspective. The crossing of 82nd ave is of particular amazement. There is a cross-ride signal there that is VERY fast to let you past. Probably the fastest red light on 82nd. Also, you will go by an old Brick Factory, awesome Parks like Linnman Station, and eventually, toward Boring where the trail turns to gravel. It is just an amazing way to see this fantastic city. All the people walking, jogging, riding or rolling are all in pretty good spirits as it is a remarkable Portland Scramble that you will enjoy many times once you have done it once! So pump up those tires and grab your helmet and ride along a path that before automobiles, was the main train-line between Downtown Portland and our friends in outer east county!

TIMBERS TIME

-Timbers loan forward Bright Dike LA Blues For the remainder of the season. Coming off an injury last season the staff feel like it is the best way for him to get the playing time he deserves. And in GREAT news, Mamadu ‘FUTTY’ Danso is back after an injury during a preseason practice. Having him back guarding our back line will be GREAT! He is a proven defender and fan favorite.

-Voodoo Doughnuts has decided to HEX the Next team the Timbers Play by making a special large doughnut that fans can shove pretzels into!!! A pretty good Portland Scramble there…

-Come to the away game at Thatchers this Tuesday at 5.30!!! With Thatchers being the sponsored PUB PARTNER for the game this week, expect my small neighborhood pub to be bursting with excitement and Timbers Pride. There have been Facebook Links sent out along with emails from the Front office…GO TIMBERS!

-SIRI is going to change your job! I have a link to a great article about the iPhone assistant SIRI and how the lessons WE are TEACHING “her” will ultimately be changing the way search engines work, and even the way we work at our jobs! IF we have jobs!  http://www.imediaconnection.com/content/31603.asp The article states that the iPhone alone is larger than all of Microsoft, and we no longer want search engines, but instead ANSWERS. And SIRI is the platform that is teaching programmers how! and I am an unpaid BETA tester! The information gathering and dispensing tasks that SIRI will be able to perform will give us more hours in the day to do….whatever it is we do when we should be working!!!

-I was curious last week about Gamification and so Marshall gave me a definition and then had me Query the word Gamification into his Plexus Engine and this is what I learned. Gamificatoin is adding GAMING elements to other types of experiences or tasks! The Top Tweeters on the Topic seem to be http://twitter.com/#!/welivetoplay out of Amsterdam whos tweets link to so many gamification links, conferences and users it is mind boggling! closer to home is Margret Wallace out of NYC and San Fran. She seems to have her fingers and thoughts on all things Game! Scrolling and reading through her tweets really point out the relevance and freshness of this new learning concept. Making a game out of doing things that are lame!!!

-A time-wasting frustration filled game app called 100 floors has taken me over…The iTunes link app is here on my website along with a explanation app. Essentially, you have to move your phone, shake your phone, touch your phone or whatever to move things around to eventually get the elevator doors to open taking you to the next floor. AND like all games, each level gets harder and harder as new solving solutions are revealed, USUALLY through accident! Great for waiting in lines or if you are ever stuck in the belly of a whale!

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

We cannot help but notice that the weather on the weekends for the last few weeks has been AMAZING. Last year it seemed to just rain and drain, but THIS year has been incredible. For the last few weeks, all of the Supportland topics have involved spending money! This week and next, we are going to talk about some FREE stuff! And this week, that mean checking out and hanging out in some of our Amazing Public Parks! We have heard for years that Forest Park in NW Portland is the largest park within City Limits in the country…BUT who cares! $5000 mountain bikes and head to toe spandex models do not make me feel relaxed! If you are looking for a nice place for a picnic or stroll or even to read a book, AND not having any hills around, you should look no further than Laurelhurst Park on Caesar Chavez/39th and SE Stark. This excerpt is from their Portland Website. “Includes basketball court, disabled access picnic area, disabled access play area, disabled access restroom, dog off-leash area, historical site, horseshoe pit, paths – paved, paths – unpaved, picnic site – reservable, picnic tables, playground, soccer field, statue or public art, tennis court, and volleyball court. ” Oh, and did I mention it is flat?? WELL, not so true about Portland’s most impressive Park Mt. Tabor!!! This one is an extinct volcano!!! and its SUMMIT is at 636 feet above sea level…That is the reason the adult soap box Derby is held here each year!. This park has everything Laurelhurst does, AND include magnificent views of Mt Hood, SE Portland, Downtown, the west hills (including that forest park place) and hosts the two sometimes controversial Water Reservoirs. It also has endless combination of biking, hiking, or strolling trails. If that wasn’t enough, there is also a wide stairway on the East side from the road to the top! Portland also hosts the worlds smallest park called Mill Ends Park in downtown PDX near the water front…it is a total of 452 square inches in the middle of Nato Parkway…One really bizarre Portland Scramble. There are so many parks to choose from, the Portland Parks website has a search function based on what kind of recreation you are looking for in your park. Try and get out there and enjoy what makes Portland so Perfect!

TIMBERS TIME

-It is still hard to say, but former Seattle Sounds Mike Fucito joined the Timbers on the Pitch last night. The first player to cross the Cascadia Rivalry lines. -MLS Website

-Last week, The Timbers announced a partnership with the Portland Rain and the Oregon Youth Soccer Association Women and Girls Leagues to help create a vertically integrated development system in Oregon from Youth to the premier leagues! -Timbers Weblink

-and Last night the Timbers Hosted the Columbus Crew. The game ended with both keepers logging a shut out and the game ending 0-0. Captain Jack was moved to right back, a position of prestige here in Portland with Scot Thompson playing that position for so many years, and Jewsbury looked more comfortable and the team seemed to move the ball through the midfield was much more confidence. He also had an amazing headed clearance OVER our own crossbar to keep the shut-out possible. A Win at home would have been better, but it was nice to see us so offensively aggresive! Next game on Tuesday the 15th at Dallas at 5:30…Go to Thatchers to watch this away game as they are the Pub Partner with The Timbers for this one!

Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.

-Marshall Tweeted last week “If I want to find out how a technology works, I see if @RWW has written about it in the archives” Read Write Web being the information think tank he writes for!

-At a seminar Marshall attended, he listened to Businesses Social Strategist Amber Naslund. She feels “businesses should engage w/ social media by hiring people they trust, hire for culture then train in social media skills.” She also thinks that “The companies that are doing social well are doing it as a cross-dept practice, planned w/ resources & tied to biz goals” https://twitter.com/#!/AmberCadabra

-With the warmer days and sunshine come the first vegi’s and products from our local nursery’s and farms and this week I am going to let you know about 3 cool Farmers Markets you should keep on your radar this year, and for years to come we hope. Lets start with the well established Hollywood Farmers Market. They Opened yesterday and are really ready for the season with live music, special educational booths, and LOTS of Vendors. Their website is awesome I posted the link on the website! The PSU Parkblocks Farmers Market downtown is open from mid March to mid December and is not only great for produce, the the food carts within the market make for intoxicating smells and its downtown location make for GREAT people watching! They also have a pretty good website. Closer to OUR home is the Montavilla Farmers Market. This market is a few blocks from out house and has done a fantastic job integrating our awesome neighborhood on Sunday Mornings! They open on June 3rd this year and run through October with one extra Thanksgiving market on November 18th. You can get just about everything here! It can be fun to just show up between 10-2, their operating hours, and plan your lunch and dinner on what is fresh and perfect…There were these peaches last year that I still think about!  If none of these Markets are close to you, there is a great link on our website that is sponsored by the The Oregon Farmers Market Association that lists all the markets so if you find yourself in Christmas Valley, Oregon sometime this summer, you will know where their local farmers market is! Supporting local farms and agriculture is one of the easiest and greatest ways to keep Portland eclectic food culture growing. Yeah, you will pay retail, but that just means the farmers get more than going through a distributor, and shaking the hand of the person who picked your pepper is pretty powerful. A potent Portland scramble for sure…

TIMBERS TIME

-This last week the Timbers took one more step to becoming the Portland Rangers!! Just kidding, BUT we did sign another Scotsman named Steven Smith. He is a defender and ALSO a past Ranger like Kris Boyd. SO at least a few people will know what Boyd is saying when he speaks his Scotch English! To clear the space, we did drop James Marcelin…Sad about that…He joined the team while we were still in the USL along with current Timbers Alhassan and Dike…

-On Saturday morning the Timbers took on Montreal up in the Eastern corner of the Northern Territories and relived the common nightmare of falling apart in the last 15 minutes of the match. A controversial handball call on New Timber Steven Smith resulted in a PK, and then some fall apart defending gave the Impact a 2-0 victory. Same story, but my question is, why are WE scoring goals?

THE TUNES THIS WEEK

Willamette Week Review

“Does Portland need Petoskey, yet another dreamy folk-based act that aims to lull you into a trance as it pulls at your most deeply entrenched emotions? One listen to the vocals of Angie Kuzma and her sharp backing band and the answer is a firm ‘Yes, please.’ The band refers to itself as being made up of ‘mischief makers’ on its MySpace page, but there’s not much devilry to be found in the quintet’s shuffling and ghostly reverb-imbued sound. Just top-notch musicianship, vocals that send glorious crackles up the spine, and lots of breathtaking moments of raw beauty. ” -ROBERT HAM, WW

TIMBERS TIME

The Timbers got to finally work out for the first time this last Thursday at their SPANKING BRAND NEW training facility out in Beaverton last week. It comes with all the amenities and most importantly, a grass field to keep us ready for our competition in areas that HAVE grass fields. The play of the ball is definitely different.

-In disappointing news, Forward Eddie Johnson has announced his retirement after a 10 year soccer career. He has suffered three concussions in recent history and has decided it is time to quit. In good news, we have brought on Forward Mike Fucito from Montreal. He originally played for Seattle, but we are not going to talk about that! ALSO, we signed Uruguayan Forward  Sebastián Rincón on loan.  We need forwards that can score goals, however.

-Last night, the Timbers managed to beat the leagues best team Kansas City without actually scoring a goal of their own. On the 41st minutes, Kris Boyd crossed the ball into a spot in the box where there were no Timbers Players, but the defense for Kansas managed to put their head on it and find the back of their own net…and own goal. THE only goal of the game. We are still in last place in the west, but a strong defensive stand against the goal scoring power house is a step in the right direction!

Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.

-Lets start by getting far out twitter! I mean REAL far out, like following Netherlands astronaut Andre Kuipers as he circles the earth in the international space station! Serious tweets from Space! http://twitter.com/#!/astro_andre The link is on our website. He is always talking about the most scientific and awesome stuff, that anyone can understand. To take the experience one step further, check out his Flickr account. He is not only tweeting about how the earth looks, he is taking AMAZING photographs…. http://www.flickr.com/photos/astro_andre/  More sobering is a series of before and after photoes from space about urban sprawl that I found on CNN…. You just have to move the arrow left and right to see the changes. Check this link. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/world/road-to-rio/satellite-photos-urban-sprawl/index.html

- On a lighter note, Marshall let us know that most of all the crazy facts and information he tweets come from his research on his Plexus Engine, and that brings up what Marshall thinks may be one of the greatest Twitter Handles of all time. #veganlazysmurf  twitter feed. I have also noticed an increase in his use of foursquare letting us know what is tasty and fresh in NE Portland and beyond! Thanks Marshall!

TIMBERS TIME

-Another end of game avalanche of defensive errors yesterday allowed Landon Donavon, David Beckham, and Juninho erase the first half one – nil lead. Kris Boyd had his third goal of the season during the 23rd minute giving the Away Timbers the lead. He had another shot find the back of the net a little bit later, but it was called off due to an off side decision by the line ref. Beckhams goal will not doubt be a candidate for goal of the week.

-There is going to need to be some serious analysis done by the Timbers during the next 5 days. This Saturday they play host to Sporting Kansas City who remain UNDEFEATED this season! That game is set to kick off at 7.30. Lets hope for some confidence building as we hopefully take out the leagues best team in front of the home crowd!

-On my very first show on January 1st, Marshall told us about Now I Know by Dan Lewis,  a daily email of really cool information…or news…or just awesome trivia. Well now Dan Lewis has a new website that is also full of fun information. This one is called Fact And A Photo and I already have it feeding into my Flipboard on my phone. You absolutely HAVE to check it out…You will be shocked to know how pineapples grow or what a cashew looks like on the tree!

-While hanging out with Marshall this past Friday, Marshall completely overwhelmed me with the depth of knowledge he has in the field of social media as it pertains to technology and what is possibly in the future. He let me know that the launch of his Plexus Engine will be this summer. It will be great to see a friends hard work come to life.

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

Between 82nd and 76th on SE Stark Street is a business district called Montavilla and since I moved into the area in 1992, I have seen it change in so many ways! Where there were once Prostitutes, Biker Gangs and Drug dealers, there are now less prostitutes, less drug dealers and minimal gangs…BUT if it were any ‘cleaner’ it wouldn’t be our neighborhood. If I wanted something tamer, I would move to Beaverton! There have been restaurants and bars here since the beginning, and Lewis Rents, Mr. Plywood and The Flying Pie have been staples. But in 2005 when the Bi-Partisan Cafe opened, the whole neighborhood opened up to the idea of having a shopping district that was more than renting heavy machinery, finding that perfect piece of wood paneling, or getting drunk of cheap booze…unfortuantly, since the Bi-Partisan hipped the hood up, cheap anything is kind of rare! We have pie shops, dress shops, sushi bar, sake bar, and just regular eatery’s and bars! Starting with Chinese Village, then Roscos, then Montavilla Station, then Ya Hala, then The Country Cat, then The Vintage, and lastly, my favorite, Thatchers. I like Thatchers best because it is not a hipster bar, or swanky club, or old time dive bar. They feature sports on 7 big TV’s, delicious house smoked meats, perfect tatter tots, and they SUPPORT the Timbers! That is a Portland Scramble I can always enjoy. Where ever you go in Montavilla, just know you will love it because we aren’t very high on ourselves and frankly don’t know why you haven’t been coming over the top of Mt Tabor for years already!!!

TIMBERS TIME

-Yesterday the Timbers let down the home crowd again by allowing their defense to fall apart and failed to secure their first half lead. Two goals by Chivas USA in front of the Army quickly deflated Jeld-Wen Stadium for the second weekend in a row. The only bright spot in the game was when Boyd capitalized on their keepers fumble and found the back of the net zig-zagging the ball between two defenders.  I am a fan of sports and not a sports annalist, so my opinions of what went wrong are purely emotional, but this morning, while recording this podcast, my emotions are not the happy kind…

-In positive news, Kalif Alhassan was back as a second half substitution and although he had a few moments of creativity, his passes were not reaching their target. Hopefully after another week of training and recovery, he will be ready for next weekends test down in LA when the Timbers Play David Beckham and the Galaxy at the Home Depot Center at 7:30 pm on Saturday.

-Marshall has released the new HOME PAGE for his Plexus Engine…Very exciting to see this project really come to life!

-Marshall let a little ‘robot’ do some research last week and found out that the restaurant Chain Chipotle sends out more than 100 tweets per day on average! More than ANY other fast food chain…I suppose I don’t have a comment about this yet.

-On the funny side, Marshall tweeted a YouTube Link of what twitter would have looked like in the 80′s

-Here is a super cool live streaming and current wind pattern and direction map of the United States.

-This week, my wife took the leap of faith and got her first smart phone! It is the Siri Enhanced to iPhone and while watching and helping her navigate through the features and apps, I am again astounded at how well the iPhone is designed. Like Marshall, and my friend Simeon, her phone is a tool for business as much as a gateway for news and entertainment!

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

If you know me, you know I love to cook. AND if you don’t, just listening back to the past podcasts make it pretty evident that I take pride in not only what I make for myself, but what other people eat that I prepared! Back in January I gave out the EXACT recipe to my Spicy Dry Rub for meat…Well, almost exact, there is one small secret that I won’t ever tell, BUT TODAY, I will tell you about four of the hard to find ingredients, why I use them and most importantly, where in PORTLAND to find them. Lets start with Spanish Pimenton. This is Smoked Paprika prepared to strict standards in Spain and when used, releases an Oak Smoked fragrance and intense flavor that can only be Pimenton. Make sure and purchase the brand that I have pictured on the website Portlandscramble.com to get the real thing. The container MUST have the seal of authenticity from Spain. I use the Spicy, or Picante, and the Dulse, or sweet, interchangeably to match my mood. AND most importantly, go to NEW SEASONS MARKETS here in the Portland area to get them. They usually have both unless they are SOLD OUT. Which unfortunately does happen. You will notice back in January I also use a smoked Chipotle Powder in my Spice Mix. THAT comes from only one place. PEOPLES FOOD COOP! Going there to pick up this spice, in their bulk area, also gives you a chance to check out one of Portland’s first food coops. Take some time to explore their isles of local and organic food and support a P0rtland Landmark that has been ‘feeding the revolutions since 1970′. The Chipolte Powder there is ALWAYS fresh and smells AMAZING. The deep aromas and flavors come from fully ripe red jalapeños that are smoked over a natural wood fire just until the chiles are dried. Different from the Pimenton and worth the time to obtain! The Last ingredient are the Szechuan Peppercorns. These peppercorns are not even related to Black Pepper OR Chili pepper. They come from Asia and are actually in the citrus family and when used in food, bring a lemony and zesty tingle to the mouth! I absolutely love the flavor and only trust The Spice and Tea Exchange in downtown Portland for the freshest and best. When you go into the shop on Broadway you will be surrounded by aromas and hundreds of Jars of spices from all over the world. It is like a book store for FLAVORS.  They have a handful of stores around the country and do a fantastic job. When you are in there getting your Szechuan Peppercorns, I can guarantee you will find other teas and spices you absolutly will want in your cupboard! All these grocery stores and specialty shops are one of the reasons Portland enjoys is vibrant and eclectic food culture!

TIMBERS TIME

-The Timbers took on Real Salt Lake last night and gave the crowd 89 minutes of excitement and pride with Darlington Nagbe scoring Two Goals. Wallace was called with a hand ball in the box early in the match and the RSL converted the PK into a goal. THEN in the last few minutes of the match, fell apart defensively and allowed two goals and lost in front a a very disappointed home crowd. This was a problem the Timbers had last year. Lets hope the coaching staff can get a handle on this.

-Kalif was not able to play due to a pulled groin sustained against the Revolution last week The staff and fans all hope he is back by next week. In addition to Alhassan, defender Hanyer Mosquera is out indefinitely after sustaining a concussion and a fractured eye socket against the Revs. We could have used BOTH of their skills last night!

-Timbers play host to England’s Aston Villa July 24 at Jeld-wen Field. Portland will face the storied Premier League club in a summer friendly. This friendly may or may not be the Exhibition C ticket provided to Season Ticket holders. The decision has not been finalized. That ticket MAY be used for a Lamar Hunt US OPEN cup match.

-This week Marshall Points out an awesome Tumblr site put on the web by the Oregonian! EXCELLENT TIME WASTE MANAGEMENT here with a local perspective. Once he tweeted it out, I have been digging through the great pics myself. http://oregonianphoto.tumblr.com/

-I have also notice that he has spent a lot of time utilizing RDIO http://www.rdio.com/#/new/ . I have yet to buy the subscription and really check it out, but will this week!

-I found a great APP this week that enables your iPhone to generate READABLE PDF files. The cost is $3.99 and it is called DocScanner.  I will be using this nearly daily at my job for dealing with my receipts in accounting, and sending US Customs Documents to Bonded Warehouses around town. It is so easy to use and COMPLETELY EASY! It makes your photograph perfectly resemble a document by washing out the gray scale, giving it perfect borders and then enabling the documents to be read using the ADOBE OCR Function…oh and did I mention it was practically built to coincide perfectly with dropbox…Very nice DocScanner and Iphone for ending your long feud with Adobe!

The Simpson’s Opening Theme song was Written by Elfman in 1989 and it is a tune known by everyone…Just whistle the first little bit and those around you will immediately hum along. The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and in 2009 it surpassed Gunsmokeas the longest-running American prime-time, scripted television series. WELL, in the show the Simpson’s by Matt Groening, many of the characters and places have familiar sounding names to those who live in Oregon, and even more so, those who live in Portland. THAT is no coincidence! Groening is from Portland, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1972. Here are just a few of the Portland References…The Simpsons live on Evergreen Terrace, the same street on which Groening grew up. Groening used his own family roots names (Homer, Margaret, Lisa and Maggie) that became Simpson names.  The former Trojan Nuclear Plant, north of Portland, supposedly inspired Homer’s job. Ned Flanders was named after Flanders Street, Mayor Quimby was named after Quimby street. Bart & Lisa’s elementary school resembles Groening’s childhood school Ainsworth Elementary. Groening chose Springfield for The Simpsons‘ hometown because the Anderson family on Father Knows Best lived in Springfield, which Groening thought was the Springfield that is just down I-5 from Portland. THERE are some who believe that Sideshow Bob Terwilliger shares a name with Terwilliger Boulevard in SW Portland (Groening swears it was unintentional) because he was likely named after an early Dr Seuss Movie THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR T. HOWEVER, Groening has never confirmed ANY of the similarities. I mention this in an earlier post back in January! http://portlandscramble.com/2012/01/29/01-29-12-radiohead-and-cackalacksmovie-madness-combo/.  This last February, the 500th episode of the Simpsons was aired, so there have been plenty of opportunities for Groenings Portland roots to shine through whether he admits it or not! Thanks for the Portland Scramble Matt…

-A really cool video by Uncage the Soul productions of the opening night can be seen on this Vimeo link. ttp://vimeo.com/38961384  It is a minute and a half long time-lapse collage of the entire opening evening and is a part of a larger project called Finding Portland to be unveiled later in April.

-Coach Spenser recognizes how difficult it is to have so many potential starters at the attacking positions but admits it is a great problem to have! PortlandTimbers.com link.

-Well, yesterday in Foxboro, Mass. in New England, Saer Sène scored his first MLS goal after 28 seconds to hand New England its first victory of the season with a 1-0 result over Portland at Gillette Stadium. It was the first loss of the season for the Timbers and even though we had many chances to get one or more goals back, the defense for the revolution always forced one more touch, kick, or re-direct and we never could get the ball on frame. We left with three yellow cards and a broken nose…Better luck next Saturday against Real Salt Lake at 7 pm at HOME again in front of the Army and a strong hunger for WINS!

Steve Martin book of tweets I just saw at Powells Books… Steve Martins Book!

Highlights of some of Marshals Tweets and Retweets this last week include cash mobs, Texts messages to parents in Brazil when their kids don’t show up to school, and President Barak Obama Recognizing Sign language and saying hello to a deaf supporter. A Cash Mob where a large group of people who have been organized through social media all show up and shop, business or whatever and spend their 5′s 10′s and 20′s there to boost their local economy. In Brazil, parents get texts when a child of theirs does not pass through a special ‘detector’ that signals in on a electrical sensor embedded in their cloths. And if you want to remember what it is like to support the United States President who is savvy and capable of being socially and intellectually compassionate in any situation, check out this link. You will remember why we voted for him then and should again! Barak has never made the news because he choked on pretzels, BUT DOES understand how to acknowledge and respect the less fortunate! Every now and then in March, the miracle of the Sunshine wrestles its way through snow, rain, clouds, and cold and we all look around at the daffodils and crocus that have reminded us for about a month that it may be time to do a little plant husbandry. Once you have the green thumb itch, there is no greater place to open up your wallet or purse than Portland Nursery. Their slogan ‘a passion for plants, a nursery for plant people’ has been a mantra they have followed since 1907 it has had a few different owners but claims the same commitment to local employment and fantastic selection. Portland Nursery has two locations, the original on SE 90th and Division and the new one which opened in 1991 on SE 50th and Stark.

I can claim with pride and prove with pictures that our yard has benefited from their amazing selection through the years and love everything we have bought from them, BUT be weary of the passion fruit vine. It tends to run a bit…BUT that was my fault. I chose the plant, not Portland Nursery.

WHEN shopping at either of their locations you WILL find a knowledgeable staff, extensive selection of indoor and outdoor plants, fertilizers and tools, books and sprinklers, hats and gloves, and even ORCHIDS and LADYBUGS. I know there are lots of Hardware and Department stores in Portland that offer plants and nursery stock, but nothing supports the local community and has for over a century like Portland Nursery does. Next time you need the perfect gift for ANY holiday, don’t forget to visit Portland Nursery! The Next time you need the perfect flower for you yard, don’t forget to visit Portland Nursery. You may end up leaving there with TWO green Thumbs and a renewed inspiration for FLOWERS…A Very Horticultural Portland Scramble. http://www.portlandnursery.com/

TIMBERS TIME

-In the Season Opener a week ago, Rookie Jean Baptiste , Newly signed Kris Boyd and Fan Favorite Kalif Alhassan scored goals in the 3-1 victory over Philly. Kalif received the MLS Player of the week designation and Kris Boyd received the MLS Goal of the week for their efforts. Jean Baptiste, who was playing in his VERY FIRST MLS game had the added thrill of scoring his first goal in front of his mother who had flown our from New York for his FIRST GAME! Truly a special night for all Timbers fans and Team!

-Yesterday, in Dallas Texas, the Timbers came back from being down 1 goal to nil in the 51st minute with a great strike by Darlington Nagbe! He had just been substituted in to replace Jorge Perlaza at the beginning of the second half. FC Dallas defender mishandled a clearance which set the ball into a path towards the goal with Nagbe in the perfect position to capitalize on the turnover!

-Next Saturday the Timbers play another away match, this time in New England to face the revolution at Gillette Stadium. The kickoff is set for 1 pm.

-Marshall just got back from SXSW and it really seems to have super charged him.You should be following him on twitter @Marshallk to keep up with him! A few things about SXSW. It is a festival in Austin that begins with five days about technology, then it turns into a music festival. The film festival goes on through out it all. The following is from the Wikipedia site.

-The SXSW Music,  is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with more than 2,000 performers playing in more than 90 venues.  SXSW Interactive is focused on emerging technology, a focus which has earned the festival a reputation as a breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. That is why Marshall was there! His Plexus Engine Project received some fantastic accolades!

-On the twitter front, Marshall has recently sent out alerts about Public Radio Links, Resume tips and cool interactive games. Keep it up Marshall! You do all the exploration, we get all the rewards.

Portland has amazing summers and fall. That is without argument. HOWEVER, the springs here are dismal, cold and unpredictable. In fact, as I am writing and recording this weeks show, it is snow/rain/slushing outside right now! and it is the 18th of March…But as they say, nothing can take you to another place in your mind and imagination quite as well as a good book can, and Portland has to have the BEST bookstore anywhere in Powell’s Books.

Powell’s Books is a great place to wait out a rain (or snow) storm while planning for the sunshine that is a few months away! There is not a topic or style that is missing here. From Maps to Dr Seuss, fictional to factional, classic to modern, Powell’s has it all. There is some kind of devise that is at all of the entry doors that magically fast-forward time the moment you walk in. Do not ever plan to just ‘hop in’ to Powell’s city of books. Also, do not make a last minute decision to not purchase a particular book you had been carrying around. That will quickly result in another trip to Powell’s, and another fast-forwarding of clocks. They buy books also and have a great system of credit there that makes for a great way to ‘recycle’ books you no longer want and get more! Also, due to its 10th and Burnside downtown location, you get some fantastic people watching and an opportunity to find a delicious food cart a four blocks away at 10th and Alder! A side note, the music going on in the background right now on the podcast is Jackie Gleason  from 1955. The music is not very good, but the album cover art was done by Salvador Dali! Decent copies of this resell for up to 150 bucks and I got mine for 99 cents at Goodwill…
