 TIMBERS TIME

-Losing sucks. Losing so much that it stops hurting sucks too…Last Wednesday night, we once again embarrassed ourselves on the road by being shutdown 3-0 in Colorado. Just a few days after beating them 1-0. The only good thing about that game was…wait, there wasn’t actually anything good about that game. The rapids scored within the first 5 minutes, that de -ja -vue sinking feeling came around and then you just hoped there would be a band-aid big enough.  The season is not complete over though. There are still 3 more home games, the most important being next Saturday at 12.30 when we take on Seattle to extend our Cascadia cup lead. That would be one feel good accomplishment for the year, the Cascadia cup held high above our rivals to the North. Go timbers!

TECH TIME WITH MARSHALL

Each week I check in with Marshall Kirkpatrick for the latest in Tech news and tweets. Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.

-Marshall has been BUSY! Last weekend, I actually got a tour of Wieden and Kennedy’s advertising firm in downtown Portland where his Plexus Engine is a part of the WK PIE Program. That stands for Portland Incubator Experiment. They have a few months to use a fantastic facility to ramp up for release! I did not know ping pong, beer, and a birdsnest were so integral to a successful Portland company, BUT I DO NOW!! Stay tuned to the show to learn about all the new exciting developments for Plexus in weeks to come. In the meantime, I will continue to share Marshalls tweets and thoughts! Sometimes he is way over my head technologically, but if you aren’t you should totally be following him @marshallk on twitter.

-Check out this cool link to a room at the Yeosu Expo for Hyundai The car company. Except for the screaming child, it is totally amazing! http://vimeo.com/46857169

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

For the last few weeks, Amy and I have been heading over to NE 111th and Halsey and playing in a Trivia league….I know what your thinkin’ if you listen to this show “how could you possibly find more things to do in this awesome town”…well…We DID! The league is a part of http://www.lastcallusa.com and it is more than fun! It is more than smart…and it is more than competitive! IT is just plain fun…Our team gets together at McGillacuddys Sports bar on Wednesdays and put our brains in the ring with other teams and try our best to win WITHOUT using our smart phones! It is super fun and a great distraction in the middle of the week. Makes me think being in a bowling league someday would be fun…Hard to believe that I haven’t ever been in a bowling league. Darts, YES, but not the ball and pins…My wife is leaving the country for a few weeks to supply fresh clean water to remote towns and villages in the Philippines so I am going to use the next few weekends to smoke some brisket, paint the main floor of the house and settle on the couch with the dog to enjoy some football. It is fall and a great time to scramble things up Portland style! Talk with you all next week!!

 TIMBERS TIME

-The Timbers are still in last place. BUT the style of play that the Timbers are exhibiting and the benching/sitting of Kris Boyd has been a real spark for the team. Most importantly in my opinion is the inclusion of Bright Dike in the starting eleven. A week ago, he scored in his first MLS game against New York, and on Saturday night he occupied many defenders and had a couple strikes just go wide, and a header went off the post! I have wanted to see Dike in the mix all season and if there was a problem between him and the old coach, well, bye bye Spencer. Also, Nobody had to defend Boyd in open play, so having a threat in the middle really changes the complexion of our attack. Sal Zizzo also seems to have been given the freedom to play using his own creativity! His attacking sweeps were always a threat, but now he is relaxing and penetrating the defense with the actual intent of scoring or getting an assist. I can only hope that when Kalif is healthy again, those two sweeping the edges with Mwanga or Nagbe in support in the middle, we are going to be difficult to stop.

-Well, this week Marshall reminded us that it is always good to turn off and lose the zeros and ones for a while. He tweeted out that this week  “Just finished Vonnegut’s Jailbird, the first novel I’ve completed in years. I feel like I should go find a teenager to give it to.”

-He also alerted us with this tweet that I shared with friends quickly! “Cool: Chrome for iOS now allows you to share webpages straight to Google+, Facebook & Twitter, not just Twitter like Mobile Safari” The old way involved a lot of stupid cutting and pasting and it was lame. THANKS Marshall for giving us the tech stuff AND all the fun stuff.
-This last week I found a great Translator App that lets you use your voice for entering in a phrase, then it not only gives you the script, but you can have it read it back out loud…in as many as 56 different languages. Follow the link on our website here and any link we talk about on our website www.portlandscramble.com to learn more!

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

-I have taken the last few weeks to walk the walk I talk about and have not had time to do any Portland Scramble shows! I have been having a blast running the sound at the Montavilla Brew fest, going camping and fishing, going to some Timbers games, playing golf with friends, spending the afternoon cooking with fresh produce from our garden AND our local farmers markets, going to the restaurants I have talked about, and MOST IMPORTANT, I bought a new computer. This show and my website I have been producing and posting used up all the remaining memory I had…SO it was time to move on!!! This is the first show recorded on the new computer and hopefully it will all work! All that being said, there are a few things left to do before the summer slips away into football season! Next week, I am going to visit a lake on Mt Hood with my friend and a canoe and find some 15 inch trouts to smoke. I also plan on getting to the coast to enjoy some legendary Autumn Surfing and some beach combing with Amy and Harvey. Once the teens and tweens get back to school, everything gets wide open. The roads are faster, the parks are cleaner, the beaches desolate, and the waves are child free! So with fall right around the corner, its time to finalize your fantasy football draft, find your favorite sweater, put the box-fans away, and get ready for the magic of September in Portland. In the coming weeks, I am going to refocus on delicious Foods and Tasty Recipes as there is no greater time to enjoy cooking around the theme of local produce and meat than the Fall. Fresh produce, crisp blue sky’s, epic surfing and fishing, teenagers in scholastic prison, and  two months of beautiful fall weather make for amazing Portland Scrambles around every corner!

TIMBERS TIME

-It is all about the love and support now. The playoffs are slipping away. They actually have not looked very promising for a while. But now we can not even win at home. Last night at Jeld-Wen, we tied 1-1 vs Dallas who smeared us a few weeks ago in their house. The only bright spot was seeing BRIGHT DIKE on the field. The rest of the season will be about development and looking to the future. Getting the Scotsmen off the books would be my first order of business. Next we have a few games on the road before coming home for a Cascadia Cup game vs Vancouver on the 25th. Hopefully the players of the future will get some quality playing time to build on their confidence heading toward the future. GO TIMBERS.

Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.

-In Strange synchronicity, Marshall tweets out “OregonSoapCompany.com says it plants 1 native plant or tree for every 10 bars of soap it sells; that’s pretty awesome!” The strange coincidence of it is Liberty Natural Products, the company I work for, just bought about 900 bars the day he tweeted this out!

-And from one natural product to another, here is an amazing Story of Israeli bicycle enthusiast Izhar Gafni that did what he was told could not be done. He builds a functional bike almost entirely out of recycled Cardboard! The incredible 6 minute video link below is completely worth the watch. His love of doing the impossible and having a great time brought a smile to my face and that is what this weeks show is all about! kind of the opposite of Technology! Hand Made Soap, and Card Board Bikes! Gotta love the Portland Scramble!

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

The Temperatures were in the hundo’s over the weekend in Portland and we were stuck in town to take it all in, Timbers Game and all. But those who were smart headed to the coast where the temps stayed in the 60′s and 70′s. And Like I said last week, I am going to talk about some great places to travel outside of the city limits. THIS week, I give you Astoria. Not the popular Goonies movie tour, or up the tourist trap column, but the real Astoria! I will start by saying, a few years ago, Amy and I decided we were going to do all our Christmas shopping  in one weekend in early December 2007.  We had a lot kids to buy for back then and were so lucky to find Purple Cow Toy Store. Totally amazing independent store selling the coolest of toys! Great service AND they gift wrap for you!!! FOR FREE!!! Just buy the toys, go on to the next store, come back a bit later and pick everything up! After that, why not head over to Commercial Astoria!  Our own Greg Glover from 94.7 alternative mornings and his amazing friend Alana Jevert have opened a unique and awesome furniture, clothing, jewelry, record and whatever else they want store in Astoria. I happen to know there is an Electric Light Orchestra North American tour T-Shirt from 1981 in there waiting for you! From all your shopping, you have probably worked up an appetite! or maybe you need a drink to shake off all that Christmas Stress! Well, the Columbian Cafe and VooDoo lounge is the cure for what ales you!  Marco will take any ordinary dish and make it amazing. Delicious homemade bread and jelly, and amazing twists you would never expect. Beet Pesto was on the menu the last time we were in there! Marco said he HAD A DREAM about it, so came in decided to make it! Beans and Rice and eggs with feta, sun dried tomato and WHO KNOWS! It is always and adventure and always worth the wait if there is a line. They also own the Voodoo lounge which has AMAZING beers and drinks in a completely awesome setting. I have heard the Pizza there is fantastic, but I haven’t had it, so I can’t recommend…YET!!!  The voodoo lounge is one of the Oregon Coast best kept secrets that I hope remains cool well into the future. AND if you are lucky enough to be there the last weekend in February, you can not miss the Fisher Poets Gathering! This is one truly hidden gem on the Oregon Coast. Commercial fisher women and men come together at various bars, coffee shops, book stores and halls and share stories of the Fishing Industry in the form of Poetry and song. It began back in 1998 with a few old friends getting together in the stormy season to tell “fishing stories”. Now it attracts more that 60 poets and artists and gets nearly a thousand visitors. They even have a little twitter feed that will probably get busy in the months leading up to the festival! They even have a little cowboy poetry from Ron McDanial that always shoots from the hip and never misses the mark, even with all the fishy talk! So whether you are there to pick through some of Greg Glover’s Curios at Commercial Astoria, or stuff your face with Marco’s Seafood Mercy at the Columbian,  fill your stockings at the Purple Cow Toy shop, or even listen to the salty ramblings of the most weather hardened dreamers you’d ever meet, Astoria will completely inspire you.

-The Portland Timbers Just Can Not Win.. A Week ago in Dallas, The Timbers ‘were super doin’ it wrong’ and crumbled defensively and offensively and lost 0-5. Then in a mid week Exhibition friendly, lost to the EPL Aston Villa Squad in Penalty Kicks. And then last night, things just felt the same when in the 68th minutes, Chivas scored on a set piece when
Songo tugged Paolo Cardoza AND he dove. The 0-1 loss to Chivas was the third loss to them this season. We still have only 19 points and remain firm in last place in the west. Our goal differential is -17. THAT is the worst in the league and embarrasing. We have only two goals on the road this year…TWO!!! and the thing that hurts worst is we have lost our last 5 league games and 6 out of the last 7!!! Not the season anyone predicted. There are 13 remaining games this season and only 6 of those are at home. WE NEED A TURN AROUND. Lets go Timbers, Make us proud!

-Marshall wrote an article about what he thinks a tech start up blog should include! Follow a link from our website to read the whole article. His main bullet points that he thinks should be conveyed are Information about the founding teams relevant background, a mention of the company’s business model, a discussion of the Market and competitors, thoughts on the company’s meaning, links to previous mentions and critiques. Personal critiques are best! This format could be used to write about MANY new products, services and even entertainment in my opinion.

-Shawn Levy from the Oregonian tweeted out a cool graphic of how much social media is used EACH minute. Super cool link!

-NASA posted an AMAZING nearly 4 minute video of the earth as filmed at NIGHT! You gotta watch this thing. Totally captivating!

-And speaking of space, check out this cool iPhone case that makes you look like a Vulcan from Star Trek!!!

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

Back on June 24th, I took you all out to Clackamas County for a Lavender Festival. Well, for the next few weeks I am going to take you to a few other places outside of the Portland City Limits. There is no greater place than the Pacific NW and I am going to let you in on a secret beach town that got discovered about 20 years ago, but I am going to tell you how to still be with the locals there! Last weekend Amy, Harvey and some friends of ours all went to Pacific City for the 53th annual Dory Days. This is a celebration of their fleet of boats that launch from the beach, NOT A DOCK AND JETTY!
There is a parade, live music, vendors, etc…but the best part is heading into the Sportsman Pub and Grub and hanging with the locals and famous fisherman of Pacific City! If going to the beach for you is NOT a town and sidewalk event, but you want SAND…Pacific City has amazing beaches north and south and one of the biggest sand dunes around! People actually Para Sail and Hang glide off this massive Dune. If you are looking for a more remote experience, check out Bob Straub State Park.  If you like Surfing, shhhhhhhhhh. This place is great, just don’t tell too many people. There are rental shops if you just want to give it a try! The Fishing on both the Main and Little Nestucca are world class for Big Fish, and there is even a stocked Lake full of Rainbows!  Like I said earlier, this town HAS been discovered, but go there mid week in September after all the kids are back in school and go back to 1985 in this great little town. There is a brewery in Pacific City, but I won’t talk about it…They have put a large enough footprint here… SO, Take some sand and surf and awesome locals and REAL OREGONIANS and you get an Alternative Pacific Coast Portland Scramble just 90 miles away. Next week we will continue our visitation of awesome Oregon Destinations! Get out and Love on Oregon! Spending a little cash in these small communties is a very awesome Oregonian thing to do!

TIMBERS TIME

-After the defeat in Colorado, the owner Merrit Paulson announced last Monday morning that Head Coach John Spencer was fired.   It is not a surprise to me, but it certainly made people feel bad. BUT because of that, Gavin Wilkinson is the new head coach for now and a few changed were already made. Bright Dike came back into town from being on loan to a PDL team and we send Jean-Baptist away to get more experience…

-However, the turmoil and change did not result in a positive turn around, and last night in front of a sold out crowd, the Timbers fell 5-3 to the LA Galaxy. Two goals by Boyd and one from Kimura were a great start, but a flood of goals by LA in the first half including a PK given for a ‘dive in the box’  were too high of a mountain to climb.  4 goals in 10 minutes is hard for any club to deal with emotionally…So now we are in last place and have no time to lick our wounds as we have a game this Wednesday away at Chivas in California…This could be a rough few weeks as we find a new identity.

-This week Marshall made an unusual social comment retweeting a link from Marketplace.  It read “Wow: Army NatGuard spent $20m+ in ads at NASCAR, got 25K responses *only 20 were qualified* & none joined”  The US Army is pulling all it advertising with Nascar now…On a lighter note, Marshall tweets “You can’t write a note on the inside cover of a gift ebook”..AND on a more fearful note, He lets us know about an article in the Washington Post about the GOP..He tweets “Awesome: GOP in Texas, where US school textbook agenda is set, says teaching “critical thinking” is subversive & bad”

-I was pointed out this great website call The Wirecutter. It is a great resource for finding reviews on gadgets and things. The articles are down to earth and written for people who want information from an unbiased point of view. Go to their website and put in a search word like Printer, or BBQ, or even Headphones…You will be impressed with what you find and will probably go back!!!

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

-I have talked about food carts around Portland before, but keep being more and more impressed with them, so I wanted to tell you all some more cool stuff this week in hopes that more people go out and support these awesome alternatives to restaurants. While standing in line at the carts on 9th and Alder before the Timbers game yesterday, I heard a family of 5 talking about how they go to the Cart Block before each game and the kids get to wander around and pick out their individual dinners. SO I thought to myself “the timbers should join forces with the carts somehow” then I pulled up the Timbers Website for information about the Galaxy game and saw this article about how THEY HAVE joined! Each home game will have fan voted food carts from around town serving their food INSIDE THE PARK!!!! You only have to turn on the TV to see the success of the carts and their popularity!  Just last Wednesday on the Travel Channel, Adam Richmans show Best Sandwich in America, The Portland Food Cart Big Ass Sandwich won the  NW region beating out traditional restaurants! My Wife Amy who works downtown and is a vegetarian loves Savor Soup House and The Bombay Chaat House. While I Like Thai Food is one of my favorites! The way these carts can come and go, finding one that has been around for a while is a great way of knowing your are going to get some awesome food. Reputation and word of mouth really sell some cart food. AND I would bet that the line outside of Big Ass Sandwich was rivaling Voodoo Donuts the day after they won on Adams show.  Summer Time, Timbers Games, Downtown Portland and tasty tasty food cart treats make for awesome Portland Scrambles…Just belly up to any cart counter window, order up some amazing grub and don’t forget cash!

TIMBERS TIME

-Well its been a while since I took last weekend off, but on Saturday, June 30th the Timbers must have had a Seattle Win Hangover because they completely embarrassed themselves in Colorado and fell 3-0! BUT we acquired Kosuke Kimura in an exchange with the Rapids in which we gave up a allocation and international slot…SO not all was lost in Colorado!

-Last Tuesday, the 3rd of July, the Timbers redeemed themselves in front of the home crowd with a 2-1 win over LEAGUE LEADING San Jose Earthquakes. I a great comeback game, the team played with a common goal and unrelenting enthusiasm. It was great to see that kind of adrenaline on the pitch. Goals by both Boyd and sort of Oregon Native Danny Mwanga made for a great start to the Independence Day Holiday!

-AND Last night the Timbers traveled to Salt Lake City and returned to their old ways…They lost 3-0 and the Costa Rican Saborio had a hat trick that included a PK from a handball by Chara in the 6 yard box…Worst play honors in my book actually go to Smith…I hope someone on the Timbers staff takes a long look at his defending and passing and fixes this mistake. These has beens from Scotland are not making being a Timbers fan easy! Next up we host the Galaxy Next Saturday…Go Timbers.

-Last week Marshall Tweeted out that he had replaced Safari with Google Chrome in the lower tray of his iPhone! What a great Idea, I didn’t even know I could change them!!! SO I did…so far it is AWESOME!

-He also tweeted “days like 2day remind me 2 be grateful I’ve built a career for myself out of risk, hustle & adding value through social media. No 9-5 for me” I am jealous sometimes of his life!!!!

-Internet Columnist and Author of Next Draft Dave Pell wrote “Five years ago, Steve Jobs stood and a stage and opened a keynote address with this line: “Every once in awhile, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything.” It was, as we all know by now, one of the most dramatic understatements in the history of technology.” I recommend signing up for next draft by the way! SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

There is no way of distilling all the things that make Portland so amazing into one sentence or column or even a weekly show like this one! BUT I try each Sunday to give you something new and interesting you maybe didn’t know about! Like last week with the Lavender Festival! Well, now that it is FINALLY SUMMER, I am going to give you some things to do that try and capture a little bit of why we Portland People put up with 8 months of crappy weather. July 5-October 31 is absolutely perfect here!!! Lets Start with some social exercise. For 17 years, the Portland Bridge Pedal has been getting people off the couch and on the bike for a tour over as many as 10 Portland Bridges over the Willamette river!. You make make your ride as short at 3 miles, or as many as 36 if you are one of the 1000 who preregister!!!! The date this year is Sunday August 12th and you can anticipate thousands of participants! Go to our website for links! Does that sound too calisthenic?? How about heading out to some of our amazing city parks! I told you back in March about the adult soap box derby, but how about an outdoor movie!!! Just check out the link and listing on our site and head to one close to you for a free movie! There is entertainment before the show and the shows start around 9:30 or so…And Lastly, are you thirsty for a brew? There are many beer festivals around portland to check out. The Biggest being The Oregon Brewers Festival in Downtown Portland where a vast number of breweries will serve up to 80 different varieties of beer on July 26th through the 29th! That event is HUGE. If you are looking for something smaller, how about checking out the Montavilla Brew Fest on August 18th!!! This is at Thachers on SE 80th and Stark. This is cozy event with 8-9 breweries and live music in an outdoor environment! Great people and great breweries come together to form yet another Tasty Portland Scramble!!

TIMBERS TIME

-Last Sunday, The Timbers fell 0-1 against the LA Galaxy down in California. Perkins thought he had been fouled in the box by Donavon (which he was) and looked to the ref for a dead play, but Dunivant shot a header past him and the Ref called it a goal. http://m.portlandtimbers.com/news/2012/06/recap-dunivants-header-difference-la-top-portland

-In the final minutes of the game, Hanyer Mosquera was caught punching Jack McBean and has been suspended three games and fined an undisclosed amount. Hanter Mosquera Link.

-BUT the best news of the week is The Timbers Took down our arch nemesis Seattle 2-1 JUST a few minutes ago. Boyd received a great cross from Smith in the 16th minute to put us up one nil, then in the 25th minute, Horst got his head on a great ball that flew past their keeper! Seattle managed to get one back in the 58th, but we held the lead through the full 6 minutes of stoppage. The Game ended with red cards, fighting, and general mayhem! Just what this rivalry is known for! At the time of this posting, the seriousness of Alhassans injury is not known. Lets hope he makes a speedy recovery!

-Marshall pointed out two very different Google results when one asks Google a question in Slang vs Proper English. One is quite negative in nature and one is incredibly positive. This example uses the question “How Can U” vs “How Can An Individual” as the two questions! Go to our website to see the screen shot. Just follow the link!

-And from a positive and thoughtful Twitter Feed, Marshall tweeted out ‘The year 2015 will be the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the US.’  Hard to think about any atrocities, let alone, at home in our country!

-From Trendoy, I have a link to an AWESOME key-chain that is a USB attachable CHARGING port for your mobile Device. It is not to replace your battery, BUT when you really need just a little More Power, this little gadget is just what you need! The link, of coarse, is on our website! Key-Chain Link. For 19.99, you can finish that call, task or email!!!

SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT

Each year at the end of June, all the people I work with at Liberty Natural Products and the Oregon Lavender Farm put together a big Lavender Festival! Well this year is the 6th Annual Clackamas County Lavender Festival will be the best ever! We have three bands, two Wineries and A Brewery! Great Food, a Huge water feature, and TONS of Lavender in Perfect Purple Bloom. In years past, the Lavender has been both too far into bloom, or even worse, like last year, hardly in bloom at all! BUT not this year. We are looking perfect! What do you do at a Lavender Festival you might ask? Well there is a whole list of events and vendors at our website on the Lavender Festival Links! But to name a few activities, you could make a wreath, listen to music, have a delicious Baked Potato or Burger with all the fixins’, and even Sample some fantastic Beer and Wine. While we usually have horseback riding, we won’t this year, but hope to have it back next year. You can meet up with a friend, or even make one. Lots of people come out to the festival with the intention of just having a nice relaxing time! While it is true that we all love our dogs, Service animals only please! But besides your critters, the rest of your family and friends are invited! The festival does cover both Saturday and Sunday, trust me, being there on Saturday is the real fun! While most of my Supportland Tidbits are usually Portland Centric, this event is one that is true to my heart and always a blast for me to put together! SO, grab the kids and bring your smiles and come on out to the Clackamas County Lavender Festival!

Special Feature Story of the Week

TIMBERS TIME

-Five members of the Team are off representing their home countries during this international break. Jake Gleeson is between the posts for New Zealand, and Footy Danso is representing The Gambia. Of Closer interest, Lovel Palmer is playing for Jamaica against Guatemala. BUT most interesting is the Intra-Team Rivalry of Rodney Wallace of Costa Rica is hosting Steve Purdy from El Salvador! Our Timbers really have a foot print in International Soccer.

-AND in an attempt to shake things up a bit, the Timbers Management made a Trade last week with the Philadelphia Union. We Traded Jorge Perlazza for Portland Raised Danny Mwanga! Nobody likes to see popular players leave the club, but he just has not produced goals this season and in sports played at this high of a level, a change of scenery can be all it takes to get a Striker finding the back of the net again. We wish Perlazza lots of goals (except against us) and we welcome Mwanga to the Club. NOW lets start winning some games!!!

-Some killer Tweets this week from Marshall include this one “Experience is valuable because doing anything for the first time is really inefficient. Duh.” He also gave us some proof of the popularity of iPhones to their owners with “Latest v. of Android took 7 months to hit 7% of its users upgraded. Latest iOS hit 7% in just 19 hrs https://twitter.com/_DavidSmith/st … says @_davidsmith”

Unrelated to Phone Technology, but totally awesome from a Musical Production Point of view, you should click on the You tube link on our website to watch is this link Marshall tweeted out! It is a little song and video featuring Mister Rogers, and some crafty editing by PBS Digital Studios!

-On Google Plus Marshall sent out the most heart warming picture of Popular Puppet Kermit the Frog. Go to our website and check it out. It will make you smile with a wrinkly lip, if you know what I mean!

The Music on this weeks show is all about the clicks and the pops of records. ALL the music was from my vinyl collection, and even though MP3s and CDs are easy and everywhere, Portland is fortunate enough to have have a deep tradition in actual Record stores. There are links to all these stores on out website and we always encourage people to shop locally! If you know specifically what you are looking for, you need to go to Everyday Music or Music Millennium. They both carry records and cd’s and buy your used music! That way you can shop even longer. The staff at both locations are super helpful and will help you find what you are looking for. I have also ordered records from Music Millennium and they were awesome. Sometimes, though, you just want to browse through crates of records and see what finds you! That is where 2nd Ave Records, Jack Pot records, and Exiled records  hit the spot. These shops cater to the obscure and awesome. No Conway Twitty or Thrift store Lawrence Welk here…These shops absolutely LOVE music and know we do to. Nothings free, or even cheap, but the quality is always tops! AND then there is the granddaddy of them all. Cross Roads Music! This store is the combination of over 35 different COLLECTORS who are always upping there personal collections and putting the seconds in the store. You will be daunted by the vastness of the store when you walk in. DO NOT plan on just hopping in for a second and looking around, before you know it, you will be doing the dj hand jive over crate after crate of mysteries and happiness. The place has such a revolving inventory, that it truly is never the same shop for more than a day. All of these shops keep the music scene here fresh and new, while paying the ULTIMATE tribute to musicians of the past! Great Portland Scrambles all of them!

TIMBERS TIME

-Last Sunday evening, the Timbers took on the Chicago Fire and got a great result! Defender Eric Brunner sliced the ball through some defenders and found the back of the net, and the Fire got an own goal off a Boyd header from a Zizzo corner kick! The Fire did find one goal, but we took the three points!

-Last Wednesday, we played an international friendly against Valencia from Spain. We lost 1-0 and even though it should have been a fun evening, there seemed little passion from our starters in the first half, and the Valencia Players, who had just finished a 38 game season did not seem willing to run much either. What WAS great to see was the hustle and hunger from the Timbers Bench in the second half. Bright Dike needs to be in Portland and NOT on loan in my opinion. He looked rabid to score in front of the staff, Spaniards and Fans.

-Saturday evening, Vancouver came to town and brought with them over an inch of rainfall and a 1-1 tie! Boyd tallied another great goal off a keeper bungle, but with about 6 minutes left, Mattocks from Vancouver was subbed in and scored within a minute on a lazy cross that no defensive Timber was willing to launch to safety. There was a questionable non-call on Kalif while in the box  in the 64th minute that still has me fuming today as I recount the evening!

-This Wednesday we take on a lower league team Cal FC from down south in the Lamar open cup..we had better crush them!!! With a win over Cal, the odds of playing Seattle in the open cup the following week are quite likely!

Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.

-In one of his stranger combination of words this week, Marshal tweeted sending a small army of young robots out across the internet to research unicorns & magicians. just another Thursday night at work. He can be confusing! He also tweeted that “@tedroden may say “free time is for hippies” (?) but I think free time is like Smart Juice…..” I wonder if he is talking about MY favorite smart juice!

-Trendoy is a cool addition to my email inbox. It exhibits cool tech gadgets that nobody needs, but sometimes we all want! Last week I got this  emailthat read “USB drives are a dime a dozen unless they are from Art. Lebedev Studio. We’ve highlighted plenty of its unique gadgets in the past – everything from its coffee mug to an LCD clock to the world’s most expensive keyboard. The trend is obvious. The studio takes an otherwise mundane object and makes it spiffy with functionality and sleek design it then charges a fortune for. The safety pin USB drive, Bulavkus, is designed around the same concept. Many of us lose these pesky drives on a regular basis. Now that it’s pinned to our clothing, it will be more difficult for us to lose track of it.” There is a link on our website to sign up! http://signup.trendoy.com/?r=http://twitter.com/

-One of the anticipated weekends of the year is Opening weekend for Trout fishing in Oregon, and even though the majority of the state opened last month, here in the Pacific NW, this Memorial Three Day weekend is the official start for those who live and recreate around Portland. Whether Worm, Lure, or Fly, it is time to go buy your license and find some fish. Places close to Portland that get a lot of attention are The Clackamas River to the East, The Willamette to the south, and the Wilson and Nehalem to the West. There are also LAKE everywhere that are stocked and those schedules can be found on the link on our website. Just go to the Fish And Wildlife website and then GO TO SOME FISHY WATER! Like anyone who fishes, I have my so called “secret spots” but really, there are fish everywhere on most rivers. You just have to figure out a way of getting them to pierce their face with your hook which is attached to some string which us attached to a stick…As a fly fisher myself, I could tell you about the fun of fooling a trout into rising to the surface and attacking your pretend bug, but I have also punctured many a worm on Timothy Lake and pulling up a 14-15 inch rainbow trout from the dark depths is equally thrilling.  For gear and tackle, I recommend Dicks Sporting Goods, Fishermans Marine,  and Outdoorsman Warehouse. All three are staffed by awesome folks that want you to catch fish and come back to get more gear…and I have. I do tend to focus on Fishermans Marine and Outdoorsman Warehouse mostly because they do not carry Golf Gear and Exercise Bicycles…If you  haven’t fished but would like to, send out a message to your twitter and facebook friends! Say you will pay for gas if someone will take you out! THAT little encouragment should be all it takes to send one of your fisher friends into a fever! Some spring time evenings in the Amazing Pacific NW forests and a tight line IS a Perfect Portland Scramble.

TIMBERS TIME

-Last Tuesday in Houston, the Timbers battled to a 0-0 draw and Perkins put on a great show keeping the sheet clean along with the rest of the team. BUT I am getting very weary of Boyd up front. His lack of speed and tendency to wait for the game to come to him is not working with those around him. I really hope Kalif come back soon! His speed with the ball will force defenders to leave Nagbe and Boyd with some space.

-The Lamar Hunt Open Cup Schedule has been Posted and The Timbers will enter the cup in the third round on May 29 either the Wilmington Hammerheads in South Carolina, or Cal FC here at Home! It will be good to see if the boys can really tear apart a less than top tier  team, and hopefully give Joeys chain saw a chance to slice up some wood…I think I would like for him to have to add fuel midway through the second half!

-The Timbers will be playing the Chicago Fire at the time of this podcast, an international friendly against Valencia on Wednesday, and Vancouver Next Saturday, so I will let you all know about all these matches NEXT WEEK! Go Timbers!

Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.

-This past week Marshall tweeted about the new Google Plus App. for iPhone saying “got more than 140 chars to post? i just post a link to a google+ thread” That got me curious about this Google+  app. Then I had ANOTHER friend post on facebook saying “Wow google + on i phone makes Facebook look like a box of flash cards”. SO I did it and set up a google plus account on my iPhone, the app really is nice. If and when the world does tire of Facebook, maybe I will already be ready!

-In chorus with what I said last week about SIRI changing the way search engines work, this last week Google announced it is changing its search parameters also to become more HUMAN like. Check out this CNN Link!  It is called Knowledge Graph and here is a link to the official Google Blog site describing it. At its core is the linking of multiple word searches into single ideas!

-AND in science news, AAnnular Eclipse going on as this show is being published at about 6:30 Pacific Time! Up to 94 % of the sun will be covered by the moon. There are some great links on the website showing WHERE it will be most EPIC and all the safety suggestions about staring at the sun. http://shadowandsubstance.com/201205/Oregon.swf

-Last week we talked about a few of Portland’ outstanding parks.  This week, in the same vein of not having to spend money to enjoy our amazing city, I am going to tell you about the Springwater Corridor and the 40 Mile loop. There are two excellent Links on the website that tell you just about everything you need to know, but let me get you wanting to hop on your bike right now! The Springwater corridor essentially starts at Omsi in lower SE Portland and takes you to BORING OREGON!!! That’s about 21 miles. It is part of a much larger 40 mile loop around all of Portland, but that loop involves lots of roads, and there are a few areas in the Sellwood area where you have to travel on some surface streets, but once you hit about 19th and Umatilla its all go! Fast or Slow! It is an amazing way to peddle your way through Portland. You will follow a paved trail that was once a railroad line that went all the way to the Eagle Creek/Estacada. In 1990, the city bought it and began the conversion! You will go along the wetlands of Johnson Creek and be in the Shadow of Powell Butte. It is amazing how you will see so many major roads from a completely different perspective. The crossing of 82nd ave is of particular amazement. There is a cross-ride signal there that is VERY fast to let you past. Probably the fastest red light on 82nd. Also, you will go by an old Brick Factory, awesome Parks like Linnman Station, and eventually, toward Boring where the trail turns to gravel. It is just an amazing way to see this fantastic city. All the people walking, jogging, riding or rolling are all in pretty good spirits as it is a remarkable Portland Scramble that you will enjoy many times once you have done it once! So pump up those tires and grab your helmet and ride along a path that before automobiles, was the main train-line between Downtown Portland and our friends in outer east county!
